Ooooooooooh my

I finally got to use my lens the way I wanted to.  This little female ruby throat is fattening up for her migration

Filling up

Male cardinal

Click on this picture and tell me what you think is going on with his feathers

We're supposed to get a frost tomorrow, so I went ahead and picked the biggest ones left in the garden

I agree with Becky. Here the goldfinches molt and get a grey winter color.Great lens, you got a fun shot on the hummer.

Ok, so I need to google "molting". I've heard of it, but not sure what it is....
Thanks everyone!

Cathy, You got really fantastic captures with your new lens! Love the fat Hummer shots. Yep...the male Cardinal is molting. I have seen this often. All birds "molt". They are replacing old feathers with brand new ones. Some birds will look rougher than others. Your Cardinal will look great again soon.
What? You are already having frost? Is this early for your area?

Well, I don't guess I've ever had a lens strong enough to see the birds molting. Yep, this is early for us to have a frost. I cooked up my 'mater tonight and got a gallon bag of juice in the freezer. I've already put away my canning supplies for the year. It's supposed to be be back up into the normal temps this week, though.

Your lovely photos remind me...I need to take down the hummingbird feeders. They are long gone and the Canada Geese have returned.
